Relativism and Materialism

Relativism can be defined as, "any theory holding that criteria of judgment are relative, varying with individuals and their environments" and of course my contention cannot be complete without reference to wikipedia, where moral relativism is defined as, "the position that moral or ethical propositions do not reflect objective and/or universal moral truths."
In a nutshell, relativism means that everybody is right and no one is wrong - that one can say what they like but that they can also pass it off as truth.

But does that make sense? the problem with relativism, in particular moral relativism is more clearly seen in how people expect others to behave. a true relativist would agree that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs. if that is so, then they would also agree that someone could do anything they wanted and not have anyone else tell them it was wrong.

What's more, relativism is an absolute in itself! relativism imposes the absolute that all truths are valid, so it's a paradox.

Likewise, so many people think that all religions are equally valid, that you can take bits and pieces of different faiths and weave them together to find a perfect compromise. one such thinking is the Baha'i faith, which bases its beliefs on the "unity of religions". but how can they be united in belief if they differ from each other? how can you make a Jew believe that the Islamic Mohammed was a prophet? or how do you reconcile that Christians believe the Messiah has already come, when Jews are still waiting? faiths can't be equal when they are mutually exclusive and preclude another from being correct.

The implications are mind-boggling; a child consistently lies - "I'm allowed to lie because I believe it's right." a thief steals - "no one can tell me otherwise because everyone's entitled to their beliefs." a murderer kills - "i take life because i want to and i believe there's nothing wrong with it." this means that no one can say that Hitler was evil and that the holocaust was justified because it was just his point of view. as we know though, that argument is utter rubbish - what Hitler did was wrong.

But how do we know this? what is it that makes us know that murder is abhorrent behaviour? where did our sense of justice come from? people say it was taught to us from birth. true, but then where did our ancestors get it from? im sure evolutionists will argue it's due to survival of the species, that it's in our genes to want to keep others alive but there is inconsistency in that argument from them.
If we truly did evolve as a fish out of water, an organism by chance, then we are purely material. that in the big scheme of things we dont have "souls", we just exist purely due to chance. that we don't have a reason for living and while our actions affect those around us, who cares? a good analogy i heard was if there was a plant, rabbit and child on the road, if you were an evolutionist you wouldn't try to avoid any of them in particular because you would believe they are all equal creations due to chance. "does it matter that the child is a human? they evolved as a result of a sperm and ovum just like the rabbit, no more, no less."

So I come back to what i mentioned earlier, that we "feel" that murder is bad because it negatively affects the continuation of the species. but as an evolutionist, why would you care if the species survived or not? aren't we just creations of chance, with no personal or intrinsic values at all, purely material? and even if for some "unexplained scientific reason" we wanted our species to surive, we'd all be racists. why would a caucasian want to help prolong the survival of asians? aren't we somewhat biologically different and therefore have a desire to perpetuate the survival our own race to the detriment of other races?

Richard Dawkins, a well-know atheist writes in his book, A River Out of Eden;

In a universe of blind physical forces and genetic replication, some people are going to get hurt, other people are going to get lucky, and you won't find any rhyme or reason in it, nor any justice. The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil and no other good. Nothing but blind, pitiless indifference. DNA neither knows nor cares. And we dance to its music.
If our actions are dictated by our DNA, true materialism, then anyone who has ever murdered has a right to say they were merely "dancing to their DNA" and not at fault, just like if a rabid dog who mauls someone to death.
C.S. Lewis, Christian and well known author argues against this;

My argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust. But how have I got this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. What was I comparing this universe with when I called it unjust? ... Of course, I could have given up my idea of justice by saying it was nothing but a private idea of my own. But if I did that, then my argument against God collapsed too - for the argument depended on saying the world was really unjust, not simply that it did not happen to please my private fancies.1

A lot of people tend to have the answer stare them right in the face but they refuse to accept, whether by stubborness, arrogance, or both. take Dr. George Wald for instance, a Nobel Prize winner for Medicine and a professor at Harvard University who said;

When it comes to the Origin of Life there are only two possibilities: creation or spontaneous generation. There is no third way. Spontaneous Generation was disproved one hundred years ago, but that leads us to only one other conclusion, that of supernatural creation. We cannot accept that on philosophical grounds; therefore, we choose to believe the impossible: that life arose spontaneously by chance!2

By his own admission, it makes more scientific sense to believe in intelligent design , that we were created by a higher being, who created us with a sense of purpose in our lives. but he specifically chooses to believe the opposite of the results of research, that of the impossible. what does that tell you about the objectivity of science?

Anyway hopefully i've generated some food for thought and that you might invest some time yourself to read up about this. because it matters.

Beyond Eden Study

Come join us for the Beyond Eden study that will focus on the first 11 chapters of the book of Genesis from the Old Testament.
Here is a short description from the author:

"The first eleven chapters of the Bible are full of cataclysmic events—the creation of the world, the fall of mankind, the flood. But what is their significance for 21st-century Christians? Looking back at Genesis from this side of the coming of Christ, what are we to make of it? Beyond Eden leads you on a voyage of discovery to find life-changing answers to these questions."

Please email us or contact your leader for more information.
See you on Friday!

Peace and Joy

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:1-8
v.1: justified: from guilty to justified. not by works, but by the grace first extended to us… which gives us the capacity for faith. justified through faith.
v.1: peace with God: being redeemed, we are no longer separated from God and don’t have to keep stressing about earning our way into heaven and God’s heart
v.2: grace: grace isn’t only the means by which we are saved, but it is the continued state in where we stand before God. we need God’s continued grace even throughout our walk…it’s hard to get out of the mindset  that nothing comes for free. and to remember that it is by grace that we’ve been saved..and there is no requirement for us to buy grace through out actions.
  • makes me wonder… have we fully accepted God’s grace? what does it require to accept God’s grace? is it fully believing that we are unconditionally loved? to believe and allow God to love us while we are  still unworthy?
v.2: we have access: heres what this says:  I’m always here for you. and wow that just makes my heart melt. haha what is it that so many people look for in life? love, acceptance and security i think. and this promise of access to God… it fulfills these needs.
v.2: rejoice in the hope: its like this.. with the perspective that we have God’s love and the hope that comes with that… how can i not rejoice? why is it i find it too easy to let my spirit be weighed down by little things… why is it so easy to forget that amazing hope that i have? so i’ll say unto my heart…rejoice! haha
  • rejoice in hope of the glory of God. find joy in God’s salvation, and joy in knowing that despite my inability to see the future, God’s glory will be seen. that God has a purpose for my life… and if i let Him, His glory will shine through in my life.
v.3: but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.
v.3: tribulations: means a catastrophic event, a time of great distress. wow… how hard it is to be able to glory in even the minor hiccups let alone times of great distress. how can i do it without the grace of God? mmm but how else do we improve our character? how else will God refine me? its through the fire, as the forger requires the heat to make metal malleable so that he can shape it… times of tribulation are to shape me… to make me turn back to God and rely wholly on Him.
v.4: perseverance, character; and character, hope: i think that these words are placed in a specific order. you can’t expect to have more hope or character without having had to persevere through hardship. its just not within God’s plan for us. i’m risking a stagnant relationship with God if i pray that God will prevent me from going through trials and hardship.
v.5: now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us: God pours out his love in huge gushing torrents… not little drips or trickles.
v.6-8: the extent of God’s love is amazing.  i think we buy into a consumeristic view of love these days… we’ll only love someone if they are worth loving. the selfish kind of love… where, i’ll marry you because you make me happy… i’ll divorce you… because you no longer make me happy. i’d love you if you were _____. while we were still sinners God loved us. a love given to people so undeserving.
for: huper the Greek word means ‘for the sake of’
peace and joy. i’m thankful for Your sacrifice. that You love me… You love me despite the fact that i am so undeserving. i’m thankful that You did it all for my sake.

40 hour famine

What: 40 Hour Famine

When: Friday 20th - Sunday 22nd August

How: For 40 hours give up something that you depend upon every day. Some food for thought to give up:
  • Food
  • Facebook, Youtube, MSN or the Internet altogether
  • Games, TV, mobile/i-phone/i-pad/whatever it is that you use to call people

How (pt 2): If you don't feel called to fast then please consider supporting people who are fasting by sponsoring them or by prayer.

Why: In giving these things it is an opportunity to depend less upon yourself and more upon God (Psalm 62:6-8 and Hosea 10:12-13). Also, the money that is raised goes towards reaching out to people, families and communities who are not guaranteed one meal a day.

Devotion: Summary from Chapters 2 & 3 of Prodigal God

Reference from Luke 15: 11 - 32.

From the Tim Keller's chapters and the parable this summary hit me:

One end, two d i f f e r e n t means.

Let me explore this:
Both sons didn't have the willingness and desire to be in a relationship/get to know the father. With the end point being to gain possession of his "things" instead, whether that be material or non-material things to be used at the son's discretion. They wanted to be in charge; they are boss.

So the being boss part was attempted via two different means:

1. being detached from the father, physical freedom, spontaneous actions/thoughts
or
2. by obeying rules, maintaining/responding to order, in a hope that the son deserves the reward. In effect he would be thinking it's my birth right to have what the father owns but I'd do the right rituals and keep tradition to look good and earn respect for myself along the way.

This parable reminded me of the world we live in. People reach the same ultimate end point position (ie. neglect the Lord) but the means of doing so and how they got there are so vastly different. Some say I had a bad experience with religion, other say you can practise whatever you wish as log as you are happy. But
are they really?

Jesus' parable really highlights that we have missed the point as to how to live life to the full and in the truth. He redefines sin were we rejected God and not let God be God in our lives. We aren't humble but proud, and proud of the fact we are proud! Are we fooling ourselves?

We must be patient and willing to listen to others. To here them out as how they got to such end and hopefully with the guidance of God, may we point them to Him appropriately.

Is the media brainwashing you?

Romans 12:2 says:

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Two words that stand out to me in this passage are “conform” and “transform”. This verse suggests that we fall into two categories – either conforming or transforming.

I will use an analogy of diffusion and active transport in biology. (How geeky I know – but as a disclaimer it’s been a while since I’ve studied these things so I cannot vouch for the absolute scientific validity or depth of my example!)

Diffusion and active transport are both processes in which cells in the body obtain or release nutrients or waste products. Now diffusion is pretty much a go-with-the-flow type process. For example in a crowded room everyone spreads out – unless you have awkward personal space boundary issues (not looking at anyone in particular). In contrast active transport actually requires energy to actively pump things in against the natural flow - like salmon swimming upstream against the flow of the water.

So if we relate this back to the verse – in our passive state, if we do nothing, we will automatically flick to diffusion mode and conform to the pattern of this world. The call, however, is for us to be transformed (like active transport) to pump in the nutrients (God’s Word!), which we require to know what God’s will is!

It’s almost like our minds and desires are mould-able play dough waiting to take the shape of its surroundings. That’s a scary thought when you think about it! Many of us live oblivious to the fact.

I suppose that’s how advertising works. But on a more non-commercial note what sort of moral values and perceptions about God are we gaining from sources external to the Bible. Whether you like it or not we begin to form our beliefs based on what we surround ourselves with.

You may have heard it said that religion and Christianity brainwashes you – But I would submit to you that we are all being brainwashed period. It is up to you to decide what you want to be brainwashed by: The Word of God or something else.

So the application point here is – what are you allowing yourself to be conformed to? Do nothing and I assure you, you will naturally go with the flow and think whatever TV or magazines tell you to.

I’m not saying that we have to cut media out completely (though it would probably do those who are serious about God some serious good) but I am saying that we need to watch what the predominant conforming agent in our lives is.

So if you are serious about growing in Christ and knowing God’s will; transform your mind and renew it daily with the Bible.

Do it – it won’t happen over night… but it will happen… if you actively transform your mind!

MYC: A Review

It's a couple weeks after the fact, but thanks for coming to YG Camp, everyone! I hope that you all had an awesome time hanging out, making new friends and learning from Aaron and Simon's talk(s).

However, following the fun and fellowship of YG Camp, a few of us had some energy to spare yet, and we headed off on the same night to Student Life's Mid-Year Conference (MYC).

MYC is Student Life's biggest event of the year. Each year it is held in Albury's Lake Hume Resort to accommodate for the people coming from campuses all across Victoria and New South Wales, and this year there was over 200 university students there from Sydney to Ballarat to Geelong to Newcastle, as well as a few mission teams (also students) from the States along with missionaries working with Student Life.

The conference ran over 6 days, starting from the Sunday afternoon of YG Camp, and it was packed with:
  • Challenging messages from John North, the speaker for MYC each year
  • An afternoon of outreach in Wodonga!
  • Training sessions and workshops
  • A dance party on the last night! :O
  • And just a whole lot of brothers and sisters in Christ to sing praise with, to sit together and pray and study the Word with, and just to encourage and spur each other on in a genuine and loving Christian community. Amazing.

  • So if you're currently studying at university, find out about Student Life. Get involved with uni ministry. Go for it!

Or at the very least go to MYC next year, because these few paragraphs will not do the event justice at all. And it is unmissable.

As for me. After going to YG Camp and MYC, back-to-back, and spending 8 days completely immersed in a community of people who exude joy in Christ, I was left sleep deprived but so glad I went to both camp and conference.

Praise God for how he is working at SCUC and at Student Life.

    Bec's Testimony

"Being born into a Christian family made me think that I was automatically a Christian. I enjoyed going to church and occasionally listened to what was being said at the pulpit or in Sunday school. So I then started praying everyday thinking that was all there was to being a Christian. However in high school, so many things outside of church influenced me and there was a lot of drama at home and at school. I slowly began to let my relationship with Jesus slide away and sort of pushed it to the back of everything else. My priorities were definitely not in order and I did not put God first. I believed I was the most important and God should just be there to look after me.

I have always believed that Christ died for our sins but somehow I just didn’t care. I could never really grasp that ‘Whilst we were still sinners, Christ died for us.’ You’d think that verse from Romans would be enough to convince me after hearing it repeatedly in church, but I was too selfish, enjoying life the way I thought it should be. My selfishness and love of worldly pleasures caused me to be apart from the Lord Jesus Christ. Although I went to church weekly, looking back now, I may have been AT church but I don’t think I was really ‘there’, meaning I just went because I had to, not because I wanted to.

However, by God’s grace, it is this year that I finally want to seek God first and have a real relationship with Him. I’ve noticed a change in my priorities and my desires in worldly things have slowly started to fade away. I remember in my childhood God allowed me to make a promise that no matter what I’ll always believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead so that we can have eternal life. Even though I have had many doubts about my faith, I praise God that He always brought me back to Him.

Throughout my life I have seen many good things happen which I praise God for. But I’ve also seen many bad things although now I finally see that Jesus teaches us to rejoice in our suffering. I am so thankful that He has led me up to this point in my life, to take this step of confirmation and to have a true relationship with Christ.

Although I know I will continue to fail over and over, I truly believe He will guide me through my life according to His will. I pray that He will give me wisdom and courage to proclaim the gospel of Christ so that all glory and honour shall be unto Him. To sum it all up, Jesus’ love and sovereignty is what has gotten me here today. He is my Saviour and King and so I can say without regret that His love [is] so amazing, so divine and it demands my soul, my life, my all."

    Quote of the week

"You never really know how much you believe anything until its truth or falsehood becomes a matter of life and death to you" - C.S Lewis
